Nostalgia, memories as I sit with my Quran

These are a few journaling thoughts I had after attending the Quran Revision Day this weekend.

The Quran Revision Day is a day where people who have memorised the Quran or are currently memorising come to recite as much of the Quran from their memory to a teacher present. Alhamdulillah, this was the second year our local city hosted this event for the woman of our community.

It’s 6:30 am. I settle down onto the ground in front of my teacher. Her smile is radiant, her presence calm. I smile nervously back and hand my Quran to her, ready to begin.

Around me, I’m already surrounded. Surrounded by the thundering noise of Quran being recited by hundreds of Huffadh. The sky outside is dark, not a speck of light in sight. But inside, it is warm and bright. Bright from the nur of the faces of all these women who abandoned their beds so early in the morning to recite.

I open the Quran, hand it to my teacher and join the chorus of sounds around me. I too began to recite.

My heart warms as the words flow from my mouth. My eyes tear up as I realise it was only by Allahs grace I could be part…
