#36 Reflections: For You To Smile

Yesterday I was on the train, commuting to work. It was a cold and dark winter morning as I stepped onto the carriage. I plonked myself onto the first seat available and as per usual, grabbed my book out of my bag ready to get some reading done over the next hour. In less than a few moments, I was transported to a completely different world, far far away from the cold dull train.

Not long in, I caught a flash of light from the corner of my eye. I looked up to see the most stunning sunrise. The sky was pink and purple and shining bright. The sun was rising slowly above fields of green, reflecting over the lake and shining through the thick of trees.

It was beautiful. I couldn’t help but smile.

Then I looked around me and noticed there weren’t as many faces of awe as I was expecting. There weren’t many faces at all, since all one could really see were the tops of many heads. A results of most faces looking down into the phones they held instead.

At that moment I realised how it was possible for the signs of Allah to be right there in front of you and for you to be still completely blind to it.

At that moment I realised Allah chose us to be of those who who weren’t blind to His signs for that moment.

At that moment I remembered Omar Suleimans talk about realising how nothing in your life is coincidence. How everything you experienced in your day is because He wanted you to. And the statement of the scholar who asked — when was the last time you left your home and came across some flowers and asked Allah 'oh Allah, for me? You kept these flowers here for me?’

We take it for granted that the flowers were there already or that the sun rises everyday, but how beautiful the world becomes when you take no moment for granted. When you realise every sunrise, every flower was put there for you to see. For you to smile.

Allahu Akbar.
